U19 Vietnam Eliminated from the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship: A Story Full of Regret for a Promising Generation

After impressive victories in the first two matches but a narrow defeat to Indonesia and unexpected results from Group C, U19 Vietnam officially stopped at the group stage. This is a story of hope, valuable lessons, and the road ahead.

Dear friends, I am Trung Tín – a professional betting expert and sports researcher. The 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship has concluded U19 Vietnam’s journey in a very regrettable way. Despite an impressive start with two resounding wins over Timor-Leste (3-0) and Myanmar (5-0), the 1-2 defeat to host Indonesia in the final group match pushed the team into a waiting position. Then, U19 Cambodia’s unbelievable 2-2 draw against Australia officially ended the Golden Star Warriors’ hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

In my observation, this result does not truly reflect the real strength of U19 Vietnam. The team under coach Yutaka Ikeuchi showed clear progress in organization and spirit. Quốc Khánh’s goal in the 73rd minute against Indonesia brought great hope. However, the controversial penalty in stoppage time caused everything to collapse. A goal difference of +7 was not enough to help us surpass the other runners-up, especially after Cambodia created a major upset. U19 Vietnam finished second in Group A but did not make it into the top 4 best runners-up.

An Emotional Group Stage Journey

U19 Vietnam had a perfect start in Group A. The two convincing wins demonstrated a sharp attack and solid defense. Although they lost to Indonesia, the players fought hard against the home crowd pressure and the opponent’s strong physical style. In my betting experience, without the penalty decision in the 90+2nd minute, Vietnam fully deserved to top the group. But football is always full of surprises, and this time luck was not on our side.

Reasons for Elimination and Major Regrets

Second place in Group A with 6 points and a good goal difference was not enough. According to the tournament format, only group winners advance directly, while runners-up compete through overall ranking. Cambodia’s draw against Australia completely changed the picture, pushing U19 Vietnam out. I am concerned that mistakes in decisive moments and limited international match experience made the team pay a high price. Indonesia topped Group A and advanced to the semi-finals, while Cambodia pulled off a big surprise.

Valuable Lessons for Youth Football

Although eliminated, this journey brought many valuable lessons. The young and inexperienced squad needs to improve their ability to maintain concentration until the final seconds, handle psychological pressure, and deal with dead-ball situations. Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi will certainly draw experience to prepare better for future tournaments. In my observation, this generation is still full of potential with many talents from the VFF training system. Today’s defeat will become motivation for them to become stronger in the future.

Future Prospects of U19 Vietnam

Vietnamese football is investing heavily in youth development. Although they exited early at the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship, these players remain an important foundation for the U23 and senior national teams in the coming years. I believe that with support from fans, the coaching staff, and the development system, U19 Vietnam will return stronger in future competitions. This is not the end, but the beginning of lessons and growth.

What do you think about U19 Vietnam’s journey this time? What are the biggest lessons the team needs to learn? Please leave your comments below to share your opinions. Let’s continue to support and follow Vietnamese youth football together!
