JOURNALIST DOAN TRANG BRIEFLY DETAINED FOR WRITING BOOKS

About 2 PM today - February 24th, 2018 - two police officers approached journalist Pham Doan Trang’s apartment in Ha Noi. Her mother was tricked into opening the door for them. They kidnapped her and took her to the Bureau of Investigation.

They went to the apartment by car. Two security officers, one male, one female, went into to the apartment to take Trang away. The others were waiting on the ground floor.

Without arrest warrant, they asked Doan Trang to follow them to “work” on the issue of her book, “Chinh tri binh dan”.

The author of "Chính Trị Bình Dân" has just been awarded the Homo Homini Award by People In Need – an international human rights organization based in the Czech Republic. The award is "dedicated to the development of human rights, democracy, and non-violent solutions to political strife."

The 500-page book is very useful for the Vietnamese in a sense that it makes politics easy to understand for ordinary audiences. Its 2nd edition will be soon available on Amazon. The police have been extreamly concerned about where copies of the book are printed.

Doan Trang had traveled quite often to avoid police’s harrassment until the recent Lunar New Year. She went back home to join her mother in celebrating the new year as well as to attend the family’s commemoration on the death anniversary of her father, only to find herself being arrested right in front of her mother.

PHẠM ĐOAN TRANG TEMPORARILY RELEASED, APARTMENT SURROUNDED

Journalist Doan Trang arrived home at the midnight last night. She later gave me a call. Both the electricity and the internet at her house were cut off. Trang said they would temporarily leave her alone. They will continue “working” with her in the coming days. The security officers told Trang that she should not leave the house. They had surrounded her apartment.

Trang told me they were probably preparing to arrest her. Today she was detained at Bureau of Investigation A92’s building which is located at No. 3 Nguyen Gia Thieu Street, Ha Noi.

They forced her to sign on to verify some documents that contain her interviews since 2015 of which she had no impression of. The police wanted to know where copies of her book (Chinh tri binh dan – Politics for the masses) had been printed.

The police tricked her mother into opening the apartment’s door for them. They said that they were representatives of the EU delegation. When her mother opened the door, they burst into her house. Trang said "If my mother did not open the door, maybe dozens of people would be willing to break the door to take her away. They were eager to arrest me." "This seems to be an ongoing effort to put more pressure on me before they arrest me”.

She felt aching with her painful legs and knees. The wound which they hit her in the past, perhaps is unrecoverable.

Before letting her go, they did not forget to threaten her that if she makes this a big story, they would to after her with something bigger. Trang is not allowed to go anywhere. They wanted her to stay quiet and cooperate with them.
